It can range from a light pink colouring to a bright red and often banded with white and pink. Its name is derived from the Greek word 'rhodon' which means rose and 'chroma' which means colour. The 'Sweet Home Mine' in Colorado produces some beautiful deep coloured crystals, but it is also mined in South Africa and Peru. It measures 3.5-4 on Mohs hardness scale.
