The borax cone is a traditional form of flux, it's cost effective and suitable for all types of solders. Simply wet the borax dish by pouring water in and tipping away the excess, then rub your borax cone in a circular motion with some downward pressure. The rough surface of the dish will grind off a little of the borax and it will mix with the water in the dampened dish to a good paste consistency ready to be painted onto the joint.
We recommend using a non-contaminating flux brush for applying the flux to your join. This fine, quality natural hair brush has no metal components, meaning it won't contaminate the flux.
These are our go-to tweezers for soldering! They are made from sprung steel, so they open when you squeeze the handles, meaning they grip pieces without effort from you. Use these to pick up tiny pallions of solder to apply to your join ready to heat with a gas torch.
Once you have soldered your piece, you will need to use safety pickle to remove the fire stain caused by heat during soldering. It works quickest when it is warm so simply mix 1 teaspoonful with warm water in a covered glass or plastic container, immerse your pieces in the solution after soldering and leave them there for a few hours or overnight to clean.
Always use plastic tweezers for inserting and removing items from a pickle bath.don't be tempted to use metal tweezers for this job (unless you have pure brass ones) as inserting steel in the pickle solution can create a chemical reaction which causes your silver or gold to be copper plated! and no one wants that!
