About Onyx

The onyx gemstone is a variety of the microcrystalline quartz, chalcedony and is one of the most popular gemstones for jewellery making. It has a black base and white upper layer but most onyx gemstones are completely black. Found worldwide it is formed by the deposition of silica in gas cavities in lava. Onyx is a common gemstone and often found in Italy, Mexico, United State, Russia, Brazil and South Africa. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale.
