About Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli is an opaque gemstone that is not a single mineral but mainly composed of the royal blue mineral lazurite, with other minerals including white calcite and sparkling gold specks of pyrite. Lapis is a popular gemstone among jewellers due to its intense indigo/blue colouring, although it can range from light greenish blue to royal blue. The name means 'blue stone' in Latin and is mined in northeast Afghanistan and Pakistan. It measures 5-6 on the Mohs hardness scale.
