This project is aimed at an experienced jeweller, as the ring setting requires skills to set the bezel around your chosen stone. This ring is perfect to use with a statement gemstone such as this stunning A quality solid opal - do keep in mind that opals are a delicate stone so care needs to be given when setting. You may decide to choose from our wide range of gemstone cabochons instead.
1. Place the opal cabochon into the setting. Make sure the gemstone sits level on the base of the setting, if it doesn't make any adjustments using needle files, course silicon polishers or a burr to get the best fit.
2. File down around the edge of the bezel to an angle and remove any file marks by making your way through the grades of sanding sheets or silicon polishers. The aim here is to ensure that the edges of the bezel lay flat against the gemstone and there is no lip. This way your stone will be nice and secure as well as ensuring the finished piece looks nice and neat.
3. Using a pusher, ease down a small amount of bezel on opposite sides of the cabochon until it is secure in the centre of the mount. Then use a bezel rocker, working from all sides and gently rock back and forth with a downward pressure until the stone is secure.
4. Smooth off the top of the bezel using a burnisher, taking care not to mark the stone.
Make the design your own by using your favourite gemstone cabochon.
