The bow drill (sometimes called a pump drill) is operated by moving the wooden handle up and down causing the drill bit to rotate. Although this may look a little complicated it is actually very easy to use & has a good, smooth drilling action. Click here for instructions on assembling and using the bow drill. Takes drills up to 2mm diameter.

“My bow drill has to be one of my favourite tools on my work bench. It is so simple to use and you'll find you quickly pick up the strangely satisfying technique of drilling with it. You only need to use one hand, so the other is free to hold your work steady whilst drilling. It makes barely any noise as well so is great for using at home; plus, I love the fascination from my 'non-jeweller' friends when they spot it in my workshop – it’s fun watching them try to work it out!"
