Making Jewellery with Gemstone Beads - Book Review
Jasmine, a 15 year old work experience student and a beginner to jewellery making has made jewellery before and occasionally continues this as a hobby in her spare time. Here she reviews Making Jewellery with Gemstone Beads, a book recommended by Kernowcraft for beginners.
‘Making Jewellery with Gemstone Beads’ is an excellent book for budding jewellers. At the start of the book, the author, Barbara Case, gives a brief introduction and describes the uses of tools and beads that may be needed for projects included within the book. I found this section very useful as I was unsure about the kit that I would need to use for jewellery making.
The book provides many exciting designs for jewellers with a range of abilities and ages. I especially admire how the book is split into gemstone themed parts and relative colour schemes, designs and how to get hold of this type of gemstone. The design of the book is arranged with a simple and effective approach, and uses eye-catching photography and clear illustrations to demonstrate difficult aspects of the jewellery’s design.
Not only does this book provide inspirational jewellery designs for beginners, the book also consists of information relative to the jewellery’s design including, time to make, difficulty to make, and simple steps to follow in order to create the desired design. As a beginner myself, I believe that this can be very practical as many people presume that various designs of simpler appearance are easier than they really are. Including the time to construct each project has a very practical use too, encouraging the user to take their time with their project.
In my opinion this book provides a beginner’s guide to gemstone beading and a number of enjoyable jewellery projects. I also enjoyed how each stone has a brief explanation to its history and the mood it creates among different star signs. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone considering jewellery and craft as a hobby or lifestyle choice.
