How 'Garryflex sanding blocks' proved me wrong...

C175 garryflex sanding blocksEtched Silver PendantC49 jewellery cloth

I have to be honest and say that I wasn’t too sure about these sanding blocks when I first saw them. I have worked with silver for years and have always turned to wet and dry paper for sanding and my Dremel with flexi-shaft and polishing mops for finishing. After nearly five years of working at Kernowcraft, I was finally convinced (or forced!) by my managing director to ‘just give them a go’ - and I have, much to my annoyance, been converted.

My problem was that I thought they looked big and clumsy, like something you’d fix some rust on your car with – not something I could use to finish off my jewellery! But I couldn’t have been further from the truth. The best way I can describe them is like a giant pencil eraser - they are solid and slightly rubbery, but still soft enough to be trimmed down to size with a scalpel or craft knife. This is great as you can cut pieces off to give yourself slimmer wedge shapes to get into tight spaces and awkward corners; or you can use the block whole which gives you a nice large surface area making it ideal for larger pieces (and unlike wet and dry paper it’s not fiddly to grip). I used the fine grade to finish off a pendant I’d been working on. It gave a lovely soft sheen to it which I simply finished off with my jewellery cloth to bring it up to a nice shine.

So I came into work on Monday with my tail between my legs, having to admit to my managing director that the one product I insisted I really didn’t like was now likely to become one of my most reached for items on my work bench. You live and you learn!
